UDF Dominates Kerala Local Polls, Storms Back to Power in Major Corporations; LDF Stunned by Urban Rejection.
Overall trends from the 2025 Kerala local body polls indicate a strong UDF surge, with the United Democratic Front leading across a large number of wards and cruising toward a decisive overall win in many municipal corporations and panchayats, as early trends show the UDF ahead in multiple corporations and municipalities.
In contrast, the incumbent Left Democratic Front (LDF) has suffered noticeable setbacks compared to its 2020 performance, with the UDF gaining significant ground across the state. A major highlight of the results is the historic performance of the NDA, led by the BJP, which has achieved a significant breakthrough by leading in around 50 seats in the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, a political space traditionally dominated by the Left and the Congress.
This is being widely described as a historic shift and could mark the first time the NDA has taken the lead in the state capital’s civic body. Beyond Thiruvananthapuram, the NDA has also opened its account in several other wards, including municipalities and some rural panchayats, signalling a broader and more competitive footprint than in previous local body elections.
Meanwhile, the UDF continues to lead in major corporations such as Kochi, Thrissur and Kannur, while tight contests are being witnessed in places like Kozhikode, where the UDF and LDF remain close and the NDA has shown a competitive presence. The elections also recorded high voter engagement, with over 73% turnout statewide, reflecting strong public participation in the civic polls.
