Cheat or Confess: Gujarat Board Brings ‘Repentance Box’, 2-Year Ban for Exam Offenders

With the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board exams set to begin on February 26, authorities have rolled out a zero-tolerance anti-cheating crackdown, sending a blunt warning to students and staff alike.

Nearly 1.60 lakh students in Surat will appear for the exams under an unprecedented surveillance regime that includes “repentance boxes” placed outside every examination centre, allowing students to voluntarily surrender chits or cheating material before entering the hall—without punishment.

But officials have made it clear that mercy ends at the classroom door: anyone caught cheating inside will have their answer sheet marked in red ink and may face a two-year ban from future board examinations. To tighten the net further, BCA and MCA-qualified IT professionals have been deployed to monitor CCTV feeds in real time, ensuring constant oversight.

The crackdown extends beyond students, with severe penalties for negligent or complicit staff—including permanent ‘red entries’ in service records that can derail promotions, cancellation of honorariums, and blacklisting of Class IV employees found aiding malpractice.

The message from the board is unmistakable: confess early or face consequences that could permanently scar academic and professional futures.
