Family Narrowly Escapes Death After Car Plunges Into Canal on Dandi–Narthan Road; Locals Stage Dramatic Rescue

A potentially fatal accident turned into a story of courage and quick thinking on the Dandi–Narthan road in Surat district on Monday, when a family of four was miraculously rescued after their car veered off the road and overturned into a canal.

The Incident

According to preliminary information, the driver reportedly lost control of the steering while navigating a stretch of the Dandi–Narthan road. The vehicle skidded off the roadway, flipped over, and plunged roof-down into the adjacent canal.

Inside the car were a couple and their two young children. Due to the force of the impact and the inverted position of the vehicle, the doors jammed shut. Water began rapidly filling the cabin, leaving the family trapped inside as the car slowly submerged.

Swift Civilian Response Saves Lives

Eyewitnesses said local residents and passersby reacted within seconds of seeing the vehicle plunge into the canal.

Without waiting for emergency services, several locals jumped into the water despite its depth and strong current. Using stones and available tools, they smashed the car windows to gain access to the trapped occupants.

Rescuers prioritized the children, pulling them out first, followed by their parents. The operation unfolded just moments before the vehicle was almost completely submerged — a delay of even a few minutes could have turned the incident tragic.

Victims Out of Danger

All four family members were rescued alive. Though visibly shaken and suffering from minor bruises and water inhalation, they are reported to be out of danger. Emergency services reached the scene shortly after and provided first aid before shifting the family to a nearby hospital for medical observation.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are examining whether mechanical failure or road conditions contributed to the steering loss. The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety and the absence of protective barriers along canal-side stretches.
