Political Earthquake: Motion to remove Rahul Gandhi ignites fierce showdown
In a dramatic escalation inside the Lok Sabha on February 12, 2026, the BJP moved a substantive motion seeking the permanent termination of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi from Parliament, triggering a fierce political showdown.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused Gandhi of “colluding with anti-India forces,” specifically naming the Soros Foundation and USAID, and alleged that his recent remarks were aimed at destabilising the country. The move comes a day after Gandhi’s fiery speech attacking the India-US interim trade deal and citing controversial claims from an unpublished memoir of former Army Chief General MM Naravane. Unlike a privilege motion, the substantive motion seeks the harshest disciplinary action — termination of membership and a lifetime ban from contesting elections — and is currently under the Speaker’s review for admissibility.
Hitting back, Gandhi termed the move “shameful tactics” to silence opposition voices raising concerns over farmers and foreign influence, while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra asserted that such threats would not deter the Congress from opposing what it calls “anti-people” provisions of the trade pact.
The confrontation has sharply divided the House, with the BJP accusing Gandhi of misleading Parliament and harming national security, and the Congress alleging diversionary politics to deflect scrutiny from the trade deal.
