Saraighat Era Ends: Six-Lane Seismic Titan Ready to Transform Assam’s Connectivity Forever.
Assam is set to mark a historic infrastructure milestone with the near completion of the six-lane Guwahati–North Guwahati Bridge over the Brahmaputra River, slated for inauguration in February 2026. Touted as India’s longest extradosed cable-stayed bridge, the project features a 1.24-km main span within an overall length of over 8 km, and is engineered to withstand the extreme seismic risks of Zone V using advanced Shock Transmission Units (STUs) that distribute earthquake forces across its supports.
Built as per Indian Road Congress standards with a projected lifespan of 100 years, the bridge will also deploy a state-of-the-art Bridge Health Monitoring System to provide real-time structural data under traffic load and post-seismic conditions—an unprecedented safety feature for the region.
The transformative project will slash travel time between North and South Guwahati from 60–90 minutes via the congested Saraighat Bridge to just 10–15 minutes, unlocking seamless six-lane connectivity, reducing fuel costs, and accelerating access to industrial and commercial hubs.
Adding to its landmark status, the bridge will feature dynamic architectural lighting similar to Mumbai’s Atal Setu, capable of displaying national colors during major occasions, symbolizing a new era of connectivity and resilience for Assam.
