AMC Chooses Flyovers Over Firestorms, Drops Slaughterhouse in Record Rs.18,518-Crore Budget
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has cleared a significantly expanded Rs.18,518-crore budget for the 2026–27 financial year, sharply raising capital spending to accelerate infrastructure development as the city prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
The revised outlay—up from the earlier draft of Rs.17,018 crore—focuses heavily on easing traffic congestion through Rs.1,000 crore worth of elevated corridors between Nehrunagar Circle and ISKCON Bridge and from Bopal’s Vakil Saheb Bridge to Ghuma, alongside new flyovers, five railway over bridges to make key crossings signal-free, and new underpasses.
Healthcare and social infrastructure also get a boost, with funding for four new community health centres, upgrades to existing hospitals, women-friendly “pink toilets,” anganwadis, and a major Rs.1,440-crore push for slum rehabilitation and affordable housing.
Sports infrastructure forms a core pillar of the budget, including 11 new sports complexes, dozens of playgrounds and gymnasiums, and Rs.100 crore for Phase-III expansion of the Sabarmati Riverfront.
In a politically sensitive move, AMC scrapped the proposed Rs.32-crore high-tech slaughterhouse project following strong public and political opposition, with officials indicating the funds will be redirected toward public amenities and city beautification, while notably keeping property and water taxes unchanged.
