Bengal Healthcare Worker Dies After Post-Recovery Health Collapse

In a heartbreaking and shocking turn of events, a 25-year-old nurse who had recently recovered from the deadly Nipah virus succumbed to cardiac arrest on Thursday at a private hospital in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The young healthcare worker, a resident of Katwa in Purba Bardhaman, had endured weeks of critical illness, including a prolonged coma that left her immunity severely compromised. Although she had tested negative for Nipah and was officially declared virus-free, her body continued to battle the devastating after-effects of the infection.

According to the Health Ministry, she was one of two Nipah-positive cases reported from West Bengal earlier this week, with her case now ending in tragedy. Despite intensive care in the Critical Care Unit, removal from ventilator support at the end of January, and signs of gradual neurological recovery — including attempts to move her limbs and speak — her condition suddenly deteriorated. Doctors confirmed she suffered cardiac arrest around 4:20 PM. During her treatment, she developed a serious lung infection and a hospital-acquired infection, compounding the damage caused by the virus.

Her death has sent shockwaves through the medical community, underscoring the brutal long-term toll Nipah can inflict even after a patient tests negative. What was first reported as a recovery story has now turned into a grim reminder that surviving the virus does not always mean surviving its aftermath.
