Varun Saikia of Navrachana School Sama won the Outstanding Achievement Award at IRIS National Science Fair 2021 held on 20th -24th January. Varun, adjudged among the top ten at the CBSE National Science Exhibition last year, participated in the IRIS(Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science) National Fair in the category of Environmental Engineering.

His project, Flipper-the data and plastic waste collection device bagged the special award instituted by the American Meteorological Society, Massachusetts for excellence in atmospheric or related sciences.

The American Meteorological Society – Massachusetts is the premier scientific and professional organization in the United States that promotes and disseminates information about the atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrologic sciences.

The IRIS Fair in collaboration with The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, promotes and nurtures Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) research amongst young Indian innovators. Due to the current situation, this year the Fair was held virtually.

“We at Navrachana School, Sama are very proud of our young innovator Varun Saikia. A very bright student with a zeal for scientific research and innovation, Varun embodies the scientific temper that Navrachana seeks to develop in its students. It is very heartening to see his commitment to finding a solution for the single biggest challenge that the world faces today – pollution”. She also added, “I am very happy that his project has received recognition at the highest level and wish him continued success in his endeavour to make our planet a better place for all,” said Suprabha Menon, Principal, Navrachana School, Sama, applauding the achievement of the young student.

Varun believes that marine and water pollution is one of the largest threats looming before the world. ‘My project is an effort to save the delicate marine ecosystem which is such a vital component for the well being of the entire planet’. Varun attributes his success to the encouragement of his principal and the support of his mother.
