Travelers heading to popular Spanish destinations this weekend are being warned to expect extreme winds and hazardous conditions.
The national weather agency Aemet has issued alerts for powerful gusts, with speeds reaching up to 100km/h in the northeastern Catalonia region.
Intense winds have prompted yellow warnings throughout the area, while amber alerts are in place along the Girona coastline until Saturday evening.
Yellow warnings are also active for the shores of Barcelona, Tarragona, and Castellon.
In addition, snow warnings have been issued for the Pyrenees, where blizzard conditions are anticipated. The Balearic Islands, a favorite holiday destination for British tourists, is also under amber and yellow warnings due to strong winds and rough seas.
Though conditions are expected to ease by Sunday, some alerts will remain, particularly in the Balearic region and along the Girona coastline.
Aemet has cautioned that very strong gusts could affect the Pyrenees, Empordà, the lower Ebro River, Menorca, and Mallorca.
On Sunday, moderate northerly and northeastern winds will persist in the northeastern third of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with periods of strong winds and gusts in the Empordà region, the Pyrenees, Menorca, and northern and eastern Mallorca.
Strong gusts are also expected in the Ebro Valley, while other areas will experience lighter, easterly winds. Intense gusts are predicted in the Strait of Gibraltar and along coastal Galicia.
By Monday, most warnings will be lifted, though a yellow coastal warning will remain in effect for Menorca, with waves reaching up to 4m and winds of 60km/h.
Similar coastal warnings are in place for Girona, Cadiz, and Gibraltar, where winds could reach 61km/h.
Aemet predicts the wind will begin to ease, with moderate tramontana winds in the Empordà region and northern Balearic Islands, and stronger gusts expected at the start and end of the day in Menorca.
