Shambhu highway reopens after year-long blockade

Traffic movement resumed on the Shambhu-Ambala Highway on Thursday after more than a year, a day after Punjab Police detained protesting farmers and demolished their temporary structures.

The Khanauri border point is set to reopen soon with Haryana Police removing roadblocks.

The road clearance exercise at the protest venues at Shambhu and Khanauri was undertaken even as angry farmers hit the streets at several places in Punjab.

According to a  report, nearly 10 JCBs were pressed into service at the Ghaggar bridge at the Shambhu border to dismantle the multilayered concrete barricading.

Haryana Police along with the PWD and NHAI started removing the barricades at the border from Wednesday midnight.

On Thursday, security personnel from Haryana removed the cement barricades on their side of Shambhu-Ambala Highway, opening the road for traffic, while barricading on the road at the Khanauri border point is still being removed.
