Tiruchirappalli Railway Division follows closely behind Palakkad in the rankings. In 2023, Palakkad ranked 54th.
However, in 2024, it climbed to the first position nationwide, overtaking divisions such as Mumbai Central, Jabalpur and Varanasi.
The assessment of operational efficiency was based on several key factors, including revenue generation, expenditure management, punctuality, freight handling, capacity enhancement and implementation of employee welfare schemes.
Taking these aspects into account, the latest rankings released by the Indian Railways placed Palakkad at the top, according to an official statement.
Palakkad Division, which was ranked 54th in 2023, had already advanced to fourth place by 2024. It also achieved record-breaking revenue in both passenger fares and freight transport.
As per data from February, the division generated revenue amounting to Rs 1,607.02 crore.
Officials attributed this success to the efficient utilisation of resources, implementation of energy conservation measures to control costs and overall service improvements. In terms of train punctuality, Palakkad Division maintained an accuracy rate of 9.01%.
In addition, considering passenger demand, more special trains were introduced. Freight transport revenue saw a 36.5% increase, with 6.41 million tonnes of cargo transported to various destinations, generating Rs 583.37 crore in revenue.
