According to an official statement on Monday, the initiative aims to vaccinate 10,000 stray dogs between January 29 and February 4 to prevent rabies-related deaths and break the cycle of virus transmission.

In 2024, the corporation vaccinated over 7,400 stray dogs under the same initiative.

This year’s campaign will expand its scope with the help of 25 teams, each comprising a doctor and three staff members, focusing on areas with high instances of dog bites as identified by local citizens and animal welfare groups.

Several organizations, including Thane Community for The Protection and Care of Animals, Indian Society for Veterinary Animal Protection, Citizens for Animal Protection, VTEAMS, and PAWS Asia, are supporting the cause.

The campaign’s primary focus is on stray dogs, as they are the primary carriers of the rabies virus, which can prove fatal if untreated after a bite.

The state government has set an ambitious target of eliminating rabies-related deaths by 2030, and this vaccination drive is a step towards achieving that goal.

Rabies is a preventable disease, yet it remains a public health concern in many urban areas, and large-scale vaccination campaigns are crucial to controlling its spread.

In an official statement, the Thane civic body emphasized the importance of community involvement in the campaign stating that the success of this initiative depends on collective efforts.
