Canopy has announced that three Chinese fashion companies, representing eight brands, have recently joined its CanopyStyle and Pack4Good initiatives.

These programs aim to eliminate the sourcing of materials from forests crucial for climate and biodiversity conservation in their viscose and paper packaging supply chains.

Canopy, an international non-profit organisation, focuses on safeguarding forests, species, and the climate by leveraging the purchasing power of the global market.

The brands involved are also emphasising the adoption of circular and environmentally friendly next-generation alternatives.

Canopy highlighted that the production of Man-Made Cellulosic Fibre (MMCF)-based fabrics and paper packaging currently leads to the logging of over 3.4 billion trees annually, many of which come from ecologically significant areas.

In collaboration with Canopy, these companies are striving to ensure that their textiles (such as viscose, rayon, lyocell) and paper packaging are sourced responsibly, avoiding materials from ancient or endangered forests.

They are actively exploring solutions like recycled clothing, agricultural residues, and other sustainable alternatives to materials from forests critical for climate preservation.

Among the brands committed to protecting ancient and endangered forests through Canopy’s programs are Ellassay Group, Engine Bird, and Happywool.

These companies join over 500 global fashion brands, including industry leaders like Stella McCartney, Uniqlo, LVMH, and Ralph Lauren, in supporting CanopyStyle and Pack4Good.

Nicole Rycroft, the founder and executive director of Canopy, expressed appreciation for the Chinese fashion companies’ approach in joining CanopyStyle during the Lunar Year of the Wood Dragon. She commended their leadership in contributing to forest conservation efforts essential for the planet’s well-being.

Canopy believes that China is well-positioned to lead the transition to sustainable viscose and packaging production. The organisation noted that Chinese Government initiatives are already driving the MMCF supply chain and fashion industry towards adopting circular practices for viscose production. Recently, German sportswear brand Adidas also partnered with Canopy to ensure their products are sourced responsibly without impacting climate-critical forests.
