A young man was stabbed to death outside a textile shop at Surathkal by a group of unidentified assailants during the late hours of Thursday.

Section 144 has been announced at the place to maintain law and order.

The deceased was identified as Mohammed Fazil, a resident of Mangalpete near Surathkal.

He was grievously injured in the attack and died on the way to the hospital, police said.

The incident occurred while Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai was on a visit to the house of Praveen Nettar, BJP youth wing leader who was hacked to death at Bellare.

The murder comes close on the heels of the killing of BJP youth wing leader Praveen Kumar Nettar in Bellare on Tuesday night.

The gang which came after Fazil who was talking to an acquaintance, charged at him, chased, caught him brutally assaulted and stabbed him.

Investigations are on into the incident, police sources said. Police have collected CCTV footage from the place which show masked men attacking Fazil outside the shop.

Shortly after the attack, section 144 was imposed in Surathkal and adjoining areas and large gatherings were prohibited. According to police, the motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained.

N Shashi Kumar, Mangaluru Police Commissioner told ANI that they have requested all Muslim leaders to perform their prayers at their homes, in the larger interest of the law and order of every locality. He added that prohibitory orders have been imposed in important areas under Mangaluru Commissionerate.
