Vice Presidential Election Scheduled for September 9, Announces ECI

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday announced the schedule for the 17th Vice Presidential election, with polling set to take place on September 9, 2025.

The election is being conducted to fill the upcoming vacancy in the office of the Vice President, following a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on July 22. The elected candidate will serve a five-year term from the date of assuming office.

According to the ECI, the key dates are as follows:

  • Notification Issue Date: August 7
  • Last Date for Nominations: August 21
  • Scrutiny of Nominations: August 22
  • Last Date for Withdrawal: August 25
  • Polling (if required): September 9 (10 am to 5 pm)
  • Counting of Votes (if required): September 9

The election will be held in Room No. F-101, Vasudha, First Floor, Parliament House, New Delhi.

The Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising 788 members from both houses of Parliament — 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha (one seat currently vacant) and 233 elected and 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha (five seats are vacant). At present, 782 members will participate in the election.

The voting will be conducted by secret ballot under the system of proportional representation with a single transferable vote. As per the Constitution, secrecy of the vote is mandatory. Electors are strictly prohibited from revealing their ballot to anyone, and any violation can result in the vote being invalidated.

The ECI has appointed the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha as the Returning Officer for the election.
