The new Mumbai showroom will offer prospective buyers access to pricing details, available variants, and trim options for Tesla’s electric vehicles. According to documents reviewed by sources, the first batch of vehicles — Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs manufactured at Tesla’s China plant — has already arrived in the country.
Customers will be able to configure and place orders for their Tesla EVs starting next week, sources added.
A second Tesla showroom is also in the pipeline, with plans to open in New Delhi later this month.
Tesla’s long-anticipated launch in India comes at a pivotal time for the company. Global sales slumped in the second quarter, despite CEO Elon Musk’s assurances that the business had recovered from recent political controversies linked to his ties with the Trump administration. The India entry offers a strategic opportunity to tap into the world’s third-largest automobile market.
The Model Y — currently the world’s best-selling electric vehicle — will serve as a key indicator of Indian consumer demand, particularly in light of the country’s steep import tariffs. CFO Vaibhav Taneja previously noted that high duties were a major factor delaying Tesla’s India debut.
Documents indicate that five Model Y units were declared at around ₹2.77 million ($32,270) each. Given India’s 70% import tariff on fully-built vehicles priced under $40,000, plus additional surcharges, the final retail price is expected to be significantly higher than the U.S. base price of approximately $46,630.
The first week of the Mumbai showroom’s operations will be limited to VIPs and business partners, with access for the general public scheduled to begin the following week.
Tesla has not yet issued an official statement in response to queries regarding its India rollout plans.
