Prime Minister Narendra Modi today led the nation in celebrating the 79th Independence Day with a powerful address from the Red Fort, outlining his vision for a developed and self-reliant India by the year 2047. The day began with the Prime Minister paying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, followed by a traditional Guard of Honour at the Red Fort. In keeping with tradition, the national flag was hoisted amidst a 21-gun salute and an aerial flower-petal shower by Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopters, symbolizing the spirit of patriotism and valor.
In his address, PM Modi described Independence Day as a “festival of hope and aspirations,” urging citizens to unite in the mission of building a Viksit Bharat (Developed India). A central highlight of his speech was a tribute to the Indian armed forces for their recent success in Operation Sindoor, an anti-terror operation that neutralized threats across enemy territory. “The bravery of our soldiers has given a befitting reply beyond the enemy’s imagination,” he said, earning applause from the audience.
The Prime Minister also issued a strong warning to Pakistan, declaring that “blood and water cannot flow together,” in reference to the Indus Water Treaty, which remains suspended until there is concrete action against cross-border terrorism. He reaffirmed India’s right to use its share of water for its farmers and citizens, underlining the nation’s security-first approach to foreign policy.
Emphasizing the importance of economic independence, PM Modi warned against overdependence on foreign powers, stating that true freedom requires self-reliance. He announced several major initiatives under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission. These include the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rojgar Yojana, a ₹1 lakh crore employment scheme that offers ₹15,000 to youth who secure private-sector jobs, with the potential to create 3.5 crore new employment opportunities. He also announced next-generation GST reforms, promising reduced taxes on essential goods, to be rolled out by Diwali.
Among the key technological advancements highlighted was the debut of made-in-India semiconductor chips by the end of this year, marking a significant step in India's push for digital sovereignty. Additionally, PM Modi unveiled a National Deep Water Exploration Mission to enhance India’s energy security by tapping into offshore oil and gas reserves.
Addressing the plight of farmers, Modi pledged full support and protection, stating, “I stand like a wall to safeguard our farmers’ interests.” He also expressed solidarity with citizens affected by recent floods and natural disasters, assuring that the government is committed to providing timely relief and rehabilitation.
The Independence Day celebrations concluded with vibrant cultural performances and participation from school children, NCC cadets, and citizens from across the country, showcasing India’s diversity and unity. PM Modi's address, rooted in nationalism, innovation, and inclusive development, set the tone for India’s march toward its centenary of independence in 2047.
