On Sunday (January 2), Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha ordered an additional Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for the kin of the deceased, a day after 12 people died and several others were injured in a stampede at Vaishno Devi shrine.
On Sunday, Sinha presided over a high-level meeting of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, after which he announced an extra Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia, according to ANI. A settlement of Rs 10 lakh had previously been announced for the victims' families. The kin will now receive a total of Rs 15 lakh in compensation.
In addition, 16 people were hurt in the stampede at the Vaishno Devi shrine, with nine of them being released from the hospital. On Saturday, around 2:15 a.m., an incident occurred near gate number 3 at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan.
According to the police, an altercation broke out, resulting in people pushing each other and a stampede. Leaders from all political parties expressed their sorrow at the incident.
Meanwhile, a three-member panel has been formed to investigate the Vaishno Devi shrine stampede and has been given a week to present its findings to the Jammu and Kashmir administration. The committee is chaired by the principal secretary (home) and includes Jammu Divisional Commissioner Raghav Langer and Mukesh Singh, Additional Director General of Police, Jammu. The order issued by General Administration Department Principal Secretary Manoj Kumar Dwivedi stated, "The Committee shall examine in detail the causes/reasons behind the incident (stampede), point out the lapses, and fix the responsibility thereof."
