In a devastating incident early Monday morning, a massive fire broke out in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward of the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan, resulting in the deaths of six patients, officials confirmed. The deceased include two women and four men.
Dr. Anurag Dhakad, in-charge of the Trauma Center at SMS Hospital, stated that the fire originated due to a short circuit in the trauma ICU, which quickly spread and released toxic smoke. At the time of the incident, 11 patients were admitted in the trauma ICU where the fire started.
According to Dr. Dhakad, the second floor of the trauma center has two ICUs – the Trauma ICU and a Semi-ICU. A total of 24 patients were admitted at the time of the incident, including 11 in the Trauma ICU and 13 in the Semi-ICU. The fire spread rapidly from the Trauma ICU, leading to the leakage of poisonous gas.

An official from the hospital mentioned that most of the critical patients lost consciousness due to the smoke. "Our trauma center team, including nursing staff and ward boys, acted swiftly and moved the patients out of the ICU on trolleys. They were immediately shifted to other locations. Unfortunately, six of them were in critical condition. We attempted to revive them through CPR, but could not save them," the official added.
The incident has raised serious concerns about hospital safety protocols and emergency preparedness. An investigation is currently underway.
