In Manipur, the law and order situation is improving gradually and the Army and Paramilitary are putting all efforts to restore normalcy in the State. Meanwhile, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey has requested the people of Manipur to maintain peace and communal harmony. In a message given through Akashvani last night, the Governor said that various communities of Manipur have been living together in coexistence for many years.
Violence only brings destruction and mistrust among us, added the Governor. Governor Anusuiya Uikey asked all communities to adopt non-violence and coexist to develop society.
So far, the public curfew is in force and no relaxation has been made. Scarcity of essential items has begun hitting the public throughout the State. However, the Government of Manipur will partially relax the curfew from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM today to allow people to buy essential items.
The decision was taken after the law and order situation improved in the Churachandpur district and after talks were held between the state government and various stakeholders, a notification stated.
Earlier, violence broke out in some parts of Manipur on the 3rd of May during the 'Tribal Solidarity March' called by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district to protest Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. A curfew was imposed across several districts. The State government also stopped mobile data services for five days. The Centre is constantly monitoring the situation and an adequate number of para-military, security forces have already been deployed to bring the situation under control.
