Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked to Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday (February 5, 2022), just hours after an earthquake of a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the Union Territory.

"An earthquake of 5.7 magnitude hit Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday but there were no reports of any loss of life or damage to property," officials said.

The quake's epicentre was near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, and it struck at 9.45 a.m. They reported strong shocks in Jammu and Kashmir.

PM Modi summoned Sinha, according to official sources, to examine the situation in the union territory following the tremors.

The quake struck at 36.34 degrees north latitude and 71.05 degrees east longitude at a depth of 181 kilometres, according to officials.

People raced out of their homes as the earthquakes generated panic.
