On Wednesday morning, an unidentified terrorist was killed in a continuing nighttime confrontation with security forces in the Rajpora area of South Kashmir's Pulwama district.
"One unidentified terrorist killed. Operation going on," Kashmir Zone Police said in a tweet. "
The encounter occurred after a joint police-army squad sealed off the area and conducted a search operation based on specific intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists, according to J&K police.
As security personnel closed in on the terrorists' hiding place, they were met with a barrage of fire, which sparked the confrontation.
A police officer said that "in initial hours, the terrorist hiding in the area were given a chance to surrender but he refused. The operation was done in a very cautious manner because of darkness to avoid any civilian causalities."
According to police sources, the killed terrorist was linked to the Hizbul Mujahideen terror group and had been active in south Kashmir since 2017. The name and connection of the killed terrorist have yet to be confirmed by the J&K Police.
In the area, a large search and rescue operation is still underway.
