Heavy rain lashes several parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana & Tamil Nadu under influence of cyclone Michaung
The system is likely to continue to move nearly northwards and weaken further into a well-marked Low-Pressure Area
The Deep Depression, the remnant of Cyclonic Storm MICHAUNG, over central coastal Andhra Pradesh weakened into a Depression and lay centered over Northeast Telangana and adjoining south Chhattisgarh-south Interior Odisha-Coastal Andhra Pradesh about 50 km east-northeast of Khammam in Telangana and 250 km southwest of Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh.
The system is likely to continue to move nearly northwards and weaken further into a well-marked Low-Pressure Area.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, North Coastal Andhra Pradesh is likely to receive Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places today.
Light to moderate rainfall at a few places with isolated heavy rainfall is likely in North Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and East Vidarbha.
Squally wind speed reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph prevailing and would continue during next 6 hours and gradually decreases thereafter over Northeast Telangana and adjoining south Chhattisgarh-south Interior Odisha-Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
In Telangana, heavy rain lashed several parts of the state under the influence of the cyclone Michaung. Several parts in the state have reported heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy spells of rain. Aswaraopet in Bhadradri Kothagudem district received 299.8 millimetres of rainfall during the past 24 hours. Several other places in the district received over 200 millimetres of rainfall during the same time.
Several other places in the Bhadradri Kothagudem and Khammam districts received over 117 millimetres of rainfall whereas many places across the state reported heavy rainfall during the past 24 hours.
The Indian Meteorological Department issued a red alert for isolated places in Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Khammam districts, orange and yellow alerts for several other parts of the state.
Meanwhile, the officials also forecast light to moderate rain likely to occur at many places in the state for the next 24 hours.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an immediate relief worth 5,060 crore rupees. In a letter through DMK MP TR Baalu, he said that an estimate is being carried out to assess the damages due to of cyclone Michuang.
The aftermath of Cyclone Michuang has been devastating in Chennai Tiruvallur Kanchipuram and Chengalpet districts. Chennai and Suburban areas are still reeling under floods. The Airforce Army Navy NDRF SDRF have all joined hands to deal with the unprecedented situation.
Food packets were dropped by the Indian Air Force in some areas. Essentials are being distributed in high rise apartments. As floods are yet to recede power supply will be restored only after clearing the excess water.
Special machinery has been brought from Neyveli Lignite Corporation to clear water stagnation. The Government has declared a holiday in all four districts. Additional health and sanitary workers have been brought from other districts to handle the situation.
Chief Minister M.K.Stalin, his ministerial colleagues and top officials of the Government are visiting the flood-hit areas and relief Centres to meet the people and oversee the remedial measures. The Health Ministry is also holding special camps to check on any disease outbreak. Suburban rail and road transport services stand halted as flood waters are to be cleared.
