Mumbai lashed by heavy overnight rain and thunderstorms on Monday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for the city until September 16.
The downpour caused significant waterlogging in low-lying areas, particularly in South-Central Mumbai, where rainfall intensified during the early hours. The Mumbai Traffic Police reported the closure of Andheri Subway due to nearly 1.5 feet of water accumulation, with vehicles being diverted via Gokhale Bridge.
The IMD has warned of continued rainfall, raising concerns over further traffic disruption and localized flooding. Elsewhere in Maharashtra, Pune witnessed severe thunderstorms and heavy rain late Sunday, triggering a red alert for the city.
Social media was flooded with images and videos of intense lightning. Reservoirs supplying water to Pune also recorded fresh inflows, with storage levels nearing full capacity. The IMD attributes the widespread rainfall to a low-pressure system over north Telangana and Vidarbha, coupled with an upper-air cyclonic circulation likely to persist in the coming days.
