Derek O'Brien, a member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), was suspended from the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday for "unruly behaviour." According to sources, O'Brien was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the current Session for 'unruly behaviour' in the House yesterday.
During a discussion on the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, O'Brien threw the rule book on the reporters' table, prompting the action.
While protesting against the "BJP making a mockery of Parliament and Bulldozing the Election Laws Bill 2021," the TMC politician took to Twitter to announce that he has been suspended from the Rajya Sabha.
He now joins the 12 already suspended Rajya Sabha MPs who have been protesting at the Gandhi statue in Parliament against the Centre.
Sasmit Patra, the Presiding Chair of the Biju Janata Dal, announced O'Brien's suspension, which was followed by a motion moved by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V Murleedharan in the Upper House.
After the Chair rejected his point of order, claiming the subject was addressed, the TMC member threw the Rajya Sabha rule book on the reporters' table.
The subject of suspending him was then raised by the Treasury benches. Following other members of the Opposition parties, including the Congress, DMK, TMC, AAP, Shiv Sena, Left, RJD, Samajwadi Party, and BSP, O'Brien staged a walkout from the House.
The opposition parties staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha, accusing the Chair of refusing to allow a division on the 'Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021' that they had requested.
The opposition members were outspoken in their opposition to the bill and demanded that the administration withdraw it. When the Deputy Chairman refused, saying, "the members are in the Well and division cannot be given in this situation as per rule".
The opposition was hoping for a split on the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which intends to implement long-awaited election reforms such as tying Aadhaar to the Voter ID card.
Because the Opposition was unable to achieve division, all of its members staged a walkout from the House of Commons. Meanwhile, Derek's suspension from the Rajya Sabha brings the overall number of suspended MPs in the House to 13.
Previously, on the first day of the Winter Session, on November 29, the House had suspended 12 MPs from the whole session.
