In recent years, cloudburst incidents during the monsoon season have sharply increased in the northeastern states, particularly in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. On Wednesday evening, two separate cloudburst incidents were reported in Kullu, causing widespread flooding and destruction across Himachal Pradesh. As a result, two national highways along with 325 other roads have been shut down.
₹2,000 Crore in Economic Losses Due to Continuous Rainfall
The state of Himachal Pradesh has suffered significant economic losses due to continuous rainfall. According to officials, since the onset of the monsoon on June 20, the state has incurred damages worth ₹2,031 crore. In addition to financial losses, there has been considerable loss of life and property. So far, 126 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents this season, while 36 people are reported missing.
As per reports, cloudbursts occurred at two locations in Kullu – one in the Shrikhand hills of Nirmand subdivision and another in the Bathad hills of Tirthan valley in Banjar subdivision. Due to the cloudburst in the Shrikhand hills, the Kurpan River overflowed, prompting authorities to immediately evacuate the Bagipul market area. Another incident was reported on Wednesday night in Nanti, located in the Rampur region of Shimla, where a bridge collapsed due to the cloudburst. Several cottages along the banks of the Tirthan River were damaged, and some vehicles were swept away.
Kullu Deputy Commissioner Torul S. Ravi stated that emergency response teams were promptly dispatched to the affected sites and damage assessment is currently underway. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
Notably, a cloudburst was also recorded in the Lahaul-Spiti district, resulting in the collapse of two bridges. In Karpat village, residents are being relocated to safer areas due to rising risks.
The local meteorological department has issued an Orange Alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi on Thursday. Alerts have also been issued for heavy rainfall in four to six districts from Friday through Sunday.
