The date for the formation of the new Bihar government has been finalized, with the swearing-in ceremony scheduled to take place on 20 November at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan. The event will be held in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, making it a grand political occasion for the state.
This development comes after the NDA’s sweeping victory in the 2025 Bihar Assembly Elections, where the alliance secured 202 out of 243 seats, achieving a massive majority. Within the alliance, the BJP won 89 seats, JDU secured 85, LJP claimed 19, and other parties won the remaining 9 seats.
Ahead of the government formation, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has called his final cabinet meeting at 11:30 AM today. During this meeting, a resolution to dissolve the current Assembly will be passed. Once the meeting concludes, Nitish Kumar will visit Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, completing the procedural step necessary for forming the next government. The current Assembly’s term officially ends on 22 November, which is why these formalities are being completed in advance.
Following Nitish Kumar’s resignation, the JDU Legislature Party is expected to hold a meeting to elect him as its leader once again. The BJP Legislature Party will then conduct its own meeting. Later, a joint meeting of the NDA Legislature Party will be held, where Nitish Kumar is likely to be declared the leader of the coalition. After this, an NDA delegation will meet the Governor to stake claim to form the new government. However, it is still not officially confirmed whether Nitish Kumar himself will take the oath as Chief Minister on 20 November, or if another NDA leader will assume the role.
