In a historical judgement, the consumer court ordered the Western Railway to pay 8,86,000 in compensation to a family who lost their earning member due to their negligence.

The incident happened on 6-08-2013 where Mahanarayan Pandey working with a transporter at Ankleshwar reached Vadodara station to board Firozpur Janta express. However he complained of chest pain as soon as he entered inside the bogie. The co passengers took out the mobile from his pocket and called his son in law and informed about his condition.

He then asked them to request the railway official to stop the train at Vishwamitri. However the railway official informed the Karjan railway station about the incident and told them for medical treatment. The train reached Karjan and and Mahanarayan Pandey was shifted to Karjan government hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The shocked family contact P.V. Moorjhani Managing Trustee of Jagrut Nagrik Grahak Mandal about the incident and they registered a case in Vadodara Consumer Forum on 2015. After all these years of fight finally the family get the compensation for their loss due to the negligence of the railway official.

“It’s an eye opener for the people as well as for the responsible railway officials to perform their duties with dedication. A sheer case of negligence on part of railway officials cost a life of a person who might be saved if got the treatment in time. After fight finally the consumer court ordered to pay compensation of 8.86lakhs to the family,” said Moorjhani.

He further added that the order is to teach a lesson to the railway officials for doing their job with dedication so innocent people don’t lose their life is such a way. We are happy with the judgement and ready to fight further if railway goes for appeal.
