The sudden closure of Birla Century Company, located in Juknia Industrial Estate, has sparked outrage among workers.
The company, a prominent name in the textile sector, shut down operations today due to financial losses, leaving workers furious over what they claim is a lack of prior notice.
A notice about the closure was put up at the factory gate early this morning, prompting workers to gather in protest. They alleged that the decision to shut down the facility was abrupt and did not account for their concerns.
According to the company management, the decision stems from prolonged financial difficulties aggravated by global market challenges in the textile industry.
Despite efforts to sustain production with the cooperation of workers, staff, and employees, mounting losses rendered operations unsustainable.
Management clarified that a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) had been introduced on May 26, 2023, and was extended multiple times, most recently until November 30, 2024. A majority of the workforce reportedly availed of this scheme.
The company has informed the Department of Labor and Employment and other relevant government authorities about its decision to shut down.
Workers, however, remain disgruntled, accusing the management of failing to communicate effectively about the impending closure. The protest highlights the growing tensions between the workers and the company amidst the ongoing economic challenges in the textile sector.
Further developments are awaited as the affected parties seek resolution.
