The body of a 26-year-old woman was found at a secluded spot near Basna village of Visnagar taluka on Thursday morning.
According to Mehsana police, the woman's clothing and bag were found 500m away from her body, suggesting the killer got rid of them while fleeing.
Police did not disclose the victim's name, as they suspect she was raped before being strangled with her dupatta, which was found around her neck.
Sources in Mehsana police said the body seems to have been fed on by dogs or other animals. Prima facie, it appears that she was killed on Tuesday evening.
Police officers said that her family members did not raise suspicions about anyone in particular.
