Water supply halted in Ankleshwar due to Hazardous Chemical dumping

Water supply in Ankleshwar has been disrupted for the fourth consecutive day after hazardous chemical waste was dumped into the canal of the Ukai scheme near Bakrol village.

The incident, which occurred on February 14, led to severe water contamination, causing fish deaths and a visible change in the water’s color.

Immediate Response and Water Supply Disruption

In response to the contamination, authorities immediately halted water supply to Ankleshwar city and the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC).

The inlet valves of the lakes were closed, and supply from the affected canal was stopped to prevent further contamination.

Currently, the city's water needs are being met through stored water reserves in GIDC and local lakes. However, residents and industries continue to face inconvenience due to the prolonged disruption.

Canal Cleaning and Investigation

The Irrigation Department has initiated a large-scale cleanup operation to remove the hazardous chemicals and restore the canal’s water quality.

Officials are actively working to ensure complete decontamination before resuming supply.

A formal police complaint has been filed at the Panoli police station, and an investigation is underway to identify the source and perpetrators behind the illegal chemical dumping.
