India’s first high-speed rail corridor between Ahmedabad and Mumbai is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, with planned trial runs of the Vande Bharat train and passenger services set to begin in 2027.
The Vande Bharat on this corridor will run at a speed of 250 kmph, allowing the train to cover the Ahmedabad-Mumbai distance in just 3 hours.
Although the train’s maximum speed is 280 kmph, it will initially operate at 250 kmph. Two trains with eight coaches each will run on this track.
Currently, the fastest train between Ahmedabad and Mumbai takes around six hours to complete the journey.
According to a senior railway officer, the bullet train corridor is nearly ready up to Surat-Bilimora, with construction in its final stages. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of this year, after which trial runs of the Vande Bharat will begin.
The decision on when the bullet train will start operations on this track will be taken soon.
As per the MoU, the cost of a coach from Japan was initially decided at ₹16 crore, but Japan has now reportedly increased the rates by three times.
Japan is now offering the coaches at ₹50 crore per coach, which would lead to a cost of ₹800 crore for 16 coaches.
Currently, the decision on starting the bullet train coaches is pending, and until a final decision is taken, the Vande Bharat trains will run on the bullet train track.
