TB burden remains high in Gujarat despite elimination claims

A significant gap between official claims and ground reality has emerged in Gujarat’s fight against tuberculosis (TB). In 2025 alone, 1,27,876 TB cases have already been registered, translating to an average of 357 new cases every day.

Although this represents a slight decline from last year’s total of approximately 1.37 lakh cases, Gujarat continues to rank fifth among Indian states reporting the highest TB burden.

Uttar Pradesh leads with 6.79 lakh cases, followed by Maharashtra (2.15 lakh), Bihar (2.13 lakh) and Madhya Pradesh (1.69 lakh).

Within Gujarat, Ahmedabad district tops the list with 18,500 reported TB cases in 2025 so far, followed by Surat and Dahod. 

In Amdavad Municipal Corporation limits, Danilimda recorded the highest number of cases at 2,456, followed by Ghatlodia (1,769), Asarwa (1,438) and Bapunagar (1,272), highlighting persistent urban health challenges.
