India's first lithium-ion cell manufacturing plant is set to come up in Gujarat.
The Tata Group will set up a lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility in Gujarat through its subsidiary, at a cost of Rs 13,000 crore.
The plant will have an initial capacity of 20GWh, the state government said on Friday.
Agratas Energy Storage Solutions Private Limited on Friday inked a memorandum of understanding with the state government as part of the new electronics policy, in presence of CM Bhupendra Patel.
The MoU will set the tone for setting up a gigafactory dedicated to lithium-ion manufacturing here.
The establishment of the factory aligns with the state's ambitious goal of achieving 50% carbon emission-free energy and 100% EV adoption by 2030.
The plant will help generate direct and indirect employment for some 13,000 individuals.
The MoU was signed by Vijay Nehra, secretary of science and technology, Government of Gujarat, and Rakesh Ranjan, the CEO of Agratas Energy.
The plant will help reduce Gujarat's dependence on China and Korea, which currently supply battery cells to India.
