yet another discovery of cannabis growing on the hostel campus of a university, two plants were found near Gujarat University boys’ hostel on Monday.
Police have seized the plants and are conducting a forensic analysis. In a similar incident, 23 plants with cannabis of market value of approximately Rs 80,000 were found growing on the Marwadi University campus on Rajkot-Morbi Road on April 13.
NSUI and Youth Congress workers reportedly found the plants behind the D block of the Gujarat University hostel campus on Monday morning.
A team from Gujarat University police reached the spot on Monday afternoon and seized the plants, measuring 6.5 feet and 4.5 feet.
Sources in Gujarat University said that illicit liquor trade and use of drugs are rampant in the hostel.
Rash driving on the university and hostel campuses is another issue of concern which university authorities have not taken any action against, they said.
In the Marwadi University case, Kuvadva police registered an offence under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against unidentified persons on July 30, over three months after the plants were found near the C wing of the boys’ hostel.
Police said the offence was registered after forensic testing of the plant samples in Gandhinagar confirmed it was cannabis.
A special investigation team (SIT) was formed to probe the case.
