Sayaji Hospital in Vadodara is the largest government hospital in Central Gujarat and visited by patients from all across Gujarat and other states. However the management specially the class four employees are facing the big problem of spitting at corners and public places. To clean them is a tough task for them due to the shortage of staff.

Probably no one is free from this habit as people coming to the hospitals often found spitting near the staircase and other places which are tough to clean. Medical Superintendent Dr. Ranjan Krishna Iyer started a campaign which he called Sunday ritual to clean the areas. He says the fourth class employees have to work hard to clean the corners.

"I started this as a Sunday ritual and once in a week when the OPD's are closed, I engage some of the class four employees to clean the areas fill with spits from people chewing Pan Padeki. It's very tough to clean the areas but the employees tried to clean them and sometimes paint the walls. It is my humble effort towards a never ending problem as a guy who chews tobacco himself does not like to clean a split, " Said Iyer.

This public hospital is as crowded with relatives as the patients. Pan padiki, gutkha has become an widespread habit and it creates such situation where they were seen spitting in corners of staircase, public areas. The members of the health team who have these habits will definitely contribute a lot in creating this situation.

This habit results in dirty water flowing from the wash basin. Every corner of the hospital is filled with spits and every Sunday the team were taken to dirty place for cleaning. We are engaging available staff for the work to clean the areas. To maintain the cleanliness inside the hospital is not only the duty of the cleaners but also of all. It is desirable that everyone behaves consciously and contributes in maintaining cleanliness, " Added Iyer.

He also added that strict measures like stopping people getting inside the hospital with gutka will be possible with increased security inside the premises. Most importantly it is to inculcate the habit as sometimes security guards were seen spitting.
