Prices of onions drop drastically due to unseasonal rains, farmers in distress

With unseasonal rains damaging crops, onion farmers of Gujarat are now in distress.

In Ahmedabad market yard, farmers are being forced to sell onions for just ₹5-6 per kg, while in Rajkot the price is even lower between ₹2.5 and ₹5 per kg.

At such low rates, even transporting the produce to the market yard is becoming costlier than the price they get.

As the harvested crop got soaked in rain, it is no longer fit for storage, leading to this crisis.

Meanwhile, large quantities of onions from Nashik are arriving in Ahmedabad. According to the rates recorded, Maharashtra’s onions are being sold at ₹10 to ₹20 per kg.

In contrast, Saurashtra onions fetch just ₹5 to ₹6 per kg in Ahmedabad and even then there are hardly any buyers. Only those who want to use it immediately are opting for Saurashtra onions.

In Rajkot yard, farmers are getting ₹50 to ₹200 per ‘mann’ which means around ₹2.5 to ₹10 per kg.

Farmers say that it costs around ₹18,000 to ₹20,000 per bigha to grow onion, and at current rates they are unable to recover even their basic cultivation expenses.
