Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing a public gathering in Ahmedabad on Monday, called on people and businesses to adopt the spirit of self-reliance by purchasing only Indian-made products. He suggested that shopkeepers prominently display boards declaring they sell only swadeshi goods.

Criticising the Congress party, PM Modi alleged that past governments made India dependent on imports and encouraged “scams” linked to foreign trade. His remarks came shortly after the United States announced 50% tariffs on Indian imports following the breakdown of bilateral trade talks. The dispute, which also involves disagreements over American dairy products and genetically modified crops, includes an additional 25% penalty on continued imports of Russian oil from August 27.

The Prime Minister underlined that protecting the interests of farmers, cattle rearers and small-scale industries is his top priority. “Pressures on us may increase, but we will bear it all,” he said.

Referring to Operation Sindoor, in which Indian forces targeted nine terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir, PM Modi stressed that India now acts decisively against terrorism. “We do not spare terrorists or their masters, no matter where they hide,” he declared.

Alongside his address, PM Modi inaugurated development projects worth ₹5,400 crore in Ahmedabad. These include:

  • Doubling of the Mahesana–Palanpur rail line
  • Gauge conversion of Kalol–Kadi–Katosan and Bechraji–Ranuj rail lines
  • Launch of a new passenger train between Katosan Road and Sabarmati
  • Slum redevelopment under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana at Ramapir No Tekro
  • Road widening on Sardar Patel Ring Road
  • Establishment of a State-Level Data Storage Centre at Gandhinagar
