Gujarat High Court has taken a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the deadly fireworks manufacturing warehouse explosion in Deesa, Banaskantha district that claimed 21 lives on April 1 this year.
The PIL demands ₹2 crore as compensation for the next of kin of each deceased worker, an independent probe into the incident, and fixation of accountability on government officials allegedly responsible for lapses in duty.
Following a Supreme Court directive, the matter has been transferred to the Gujarat High Court and is scheduled for hearing on November 25 before the first division bench.
A division bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymala Bagchi, in its order dated September 29, transferred the original writ petition to the Gujarat High Court.
The apex court directed the Chief Justice of the High Court to assign the case to the first division bench.
The Supreme Court also asked the Gujarat government and other respondents to file their counter affidavits within four weeks before the high court.
The litigation originated from a writ petition filed earlier by family members of six victims of the Deesa blast.
The petitioners sought adequate compensation and stringent directions for compliance with the Explosives Act and the Gujarat Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act.
They further demanded systematic monitoring and regulation of firecracker manufacturing, storage, sale, licensing, and usage to prevent recurrence of such tragedies.
