The city was fifth hottest weather station in the state, with Vallabh Vidyanagar recording the highest maximum temperature of 44.1°C.

Twelve of the 23 weather stations in Gujarat recorded maximum temperatures higher than 42°C.

According to the India meteorological department (IMD), the orange alert for heat will continue in Ahmedabad and other parts of the state for four days and maximum temperatures are likely to hit 44°C.

City-based experts said extreme temperatures should be avoided by vulnerable age groups such as children and the elderly, who should not venture out in the afternoon if possible.

Experts said prolonged exposure to temperatures over 43°C reduces blood pressure causing dizziness, headaches and nausea.

Due to profuse sweating, the body loses a lot of water and this can lead to dehydration.

Students not yet on vacation had a tough time commuting and attending class. In the Gujarat University area, many were seen trying to find relief in the shade, lemonade, sugarcane juice, soft drinks and umbrellas.

Some college students said that they are waiting for their exams to end. Many complained of lethargy and tiredness due to the heat.
