Postgraduate medical institutes in Gujarat are facing a major setback after the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved only 247 additional MD/MS seats against the nearly 800 requested by the state government and GMERS colleges.
Eight GMERS colleges in Patan, Gandhinagar, Gotri, Himmatnagar, Junagadh, Sola-Ahmedabad, Vadnagar and Valsad had collectively sought around 420 new seats but received only 173.
Similarly, six government medical colleges in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar had asked for more than 400 seats, but were granted under 100.
With only 247 seats cleared across 14 government and semi-government colleges, the Gujarat health department has directed all deans to file formal appeals before the NMC.
Colleges have already submitted appeals, paying ₹50,000 per subject. The process is likely to delay approvals and push the PG counselling schedule, with state quota admissions expected to begin around November 22, after AIQ round one results.
