The crew set up a trap near Chinchoti over-bridge in Vasai about 12.45 a.m. after receiving a tip about narcotics smuggling (east). Officials from Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) police detained two guys in the early hours of Thursday when they were smuggling 50.20 kilogrammes of Ganja, a commercial quantity, on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway.
The crew set up a trap near Chinchoti over-bridge in Vasai about 12.45 a.m. after receiving a tip about narcotics smuggling (east). The couple was transporting the contraband in a rickshaw on its way to Mumbai.
"Their rickshaw was stopped and two white sacks were found which contained the drugs worth Rs 11.44 lakh," said unit head, Inspector Pramod Badakh.
Ajay Waghe, a 27-year-old Nalasopara (east) resident, and Jay Patil, a 24-year-old Dahisar resident, were named as the suspects (east).
"We are questioning them to find the source of the drugs and where they were taking it," said a crime branch official.
Sections 8C, 22C, 25, and 29 of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 have been used to file a FIR against them.
Because the Ganja is in commercial quantities, the accused faces a minimum of ten years in prison, which might be increased to twenty years under the Act.
