Nine persons including two cops and a Gujarat Rakshak Dal (GRD) jawan suffered injuries when a large mob of minority community members attacked revellers at a garba event in Udhela village of Matar taluka of Kheda district late on Monday night.

Kheda SP Rajesh Gadhia said that 17 persons have been rounded up in the case and three of the nine injured people including a 60-year-old woman were critical.

Gadhia said that the attack occurred at around 11.30pm on Monday night when people gathered outside Tulja Bhavani temple at the centre of the village.

When some villagers called the police control room, a team of Matar police reached the venue. But the cops were also attacked by the rampaging mob, said Gadhia.

The sarpanch of the village, Indravadan Patel, said in his FIR filed with Matar police that he had taken a vow to hold a garba event in front of the temple.

Matar police have booked 43 persons by their names and 150 others under several IPC sections including 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly), and 147 (punishment for rioting).
