A deputy superintendent of police  (DySP) and a writer head constable have been accused of accepting bribes in connection with an atrocity case in Tapi district of Gujarat.

The offence in question is non-bailable, meaning the police cannot grant bail on their own once an arrest has been made.

As per the complaint, DySP Nikita Shiroya and the writer allegedly demanded bribes in exchange for providing legal relief to the accused.

The incident has highlighted that despite the state having 274 DySPs, the government has assigned 26 newly recruited officers to handle sensitive SC/ST cases.

These deputy superintendents of police were appointed through direct recruitment on 30/12/2021 and 10/06/2022 and have been posted in the SC/ST cells and city areas under the assistant commissioners of police.

In these units, cases related to atrocities against members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are handled.

The conviction rate under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in Gujarat currently stands at just 3.78%, compared to the national average of 22.4%.

This wide gap reflects not only weaknesses in the state’s judicial system but also points to unequal treatment of the SC/ST community.
