Eight youths drowned in the Meshwo river at Vasna-Sogathi village in Dehgam taluka of Gandhinagar on Friday evening. Their bodies were recovered by local swimmers and the Gandhinagar fire brigade.

The victims had waded into the river to bathe, as they were going to carry out the ritual immersion of a Ganesha idol.

The deceased included Rajesh Chauhan, Chirag Chauhan, Jaspal Chauhan, Dharmendra Chauhan, Yuvraj Chauhan, Pruthvi Chauhan, Siddhraj Chauhan and Vijay Solanki from Vasna- Sogathi village near Palundra. Police said all of the deceased were between 20 and 25.

A team of Dehgam police and additional forces from Gandhinagar police were deployed at the spot to control the crowd and to ease the search operation.
The bodies were brought to the govt hospital at Rakhiyal village. Dehgam police have registered a case of accidental death. In six days, 15 people have drowned in Gujarat in cases linked to idol immersion.
