Eight youths drowned in the Meshwo river at Vasna-Sogathi village in Dehgam taluka of Gandhinagar on Friday evening. Their bodies were recovered by local swimmers and the Gandhinagar fire brigade.
The victims had waded into the river to bathe, as they were going to carry out the ritual immersion of a Ganesha idol.
The deceased included Rajesh Chauhan, Chirag Chauhan, Jaspal Chauhan, Dharmendra Chauhan, Yuvraj Chauhan, Pruthvi Chauhan, Siddhraj Chauhan and Vijay Solanki from Vasna- Sogathi village near Palundra. Police said all of the deceased were between 20 and 25.
A Gandhinagar fire brigade officer said though there was no heavy flow of water, the victims had waded deep into the river and got caught in a whirlpool.
