With several parts of Anand district’s Umreth town and surrounding villages being declared cholera affected after two positive cases were reported Tuesday, the district health department Wednesday commenced a health survey in the area.
Around 70 to 85 cases of diarrhoea and vomiting on Wednesday were reported from Umreth town, of which 27 were admitted to health centres, said officials.
Several samples were later sent to the laboratory for confirmation of cholera.
Of these, two cases tested positive for the disease, prompting the district administration to declare the areas as cholera affected Tuesday.
During the survey, 20 health department teams distributed chlorine tablets and ORS even as the municipality repaired leaks in water pipelines to prevent contamination.
During the survey, the officials from the municipality and health department had found 12 leakage points in the water supply lines in the town that could be a possible source of contamination.
According to the officials, parts of Umreth town Kajiwad and Khatkiwad and a 5-km peripheral area have been declared cholera affected.
This includes the villages of Thamna, Lingda, Hamidpura, Bharoda, Ratanpura, Gangapura, Bechri, Bhatpura, Navapura, Sureli, Dhuleta and Parvata.
