A crime scene reconstruction turned into a deadly encounter in Gandhinagar on Wednesday when a murder accused allegedly snatched a police revolver and opened fire, forcing officers to retaliate and fatally shoot him.
The incident occurred around 4:45 PM during a reconstruction exercise conducted by the Local Crime Branch (LCB) involving accused Vipul Parmar, who was being taken to the scene of his alleged crime by two police teams led by Inspectors Diwansinh Vala and Hardik Parmar.
How the Encounter Unfolded
According to LCB officials, Vipul was being transported in the lead police vehicle, which also carried two PSIs, a constable, and the driver. Vipul was seated between Head Constable Rajendrasinh and PSI Patadia. The second vehicle followed with other team members and senior officers.
As the first vehicle slowed down near the crime location, Vipul allegedly snatched the revolver from PSI Patadia's left side. A scuffle broke out immediately, with Rajendrasinh trying to overpower the accused inside the moving vehicle.
In the chaos, Vipul fired a shot. The bullet struck Rajendrasinh above his left elbow, grazed the PSI in front, and shattered the vehicle’s windshield. Rajendrasinh collapsed, and Vipul, still in handcuffs, jumped out of the car and began fleeing.
Vipul allegedly turned back and opened fire at the second police vehicle, damaging its bonnet and door panels. As officers disembarked to take cover, he continued firing while running toward nearby bushes.
One bullet reportedly whizzed past Inspector Vala’s head. Police say that facing continuous gunfire, both Vala and Parmar had no choice but to return fire in self-defence.
Vipul Shot While Fleeing
The first police bullet struck Vipul in the leg, but he kept firing while running. A second round of police fire hit him in the lower back and waist. Vipul collapsed approximately 30 metres away.
He was found unconscious and declared dead at the scene by a 108 emergency medical team. Injured officer Rajendrasinh was immediately rushed to Apollo Hospital for emergency care.
Investigation Underway
A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team arrived to examine the site, and senior police officials have launched a detailed investigation into the sequence of events.
This incident raises questions around accused handling during reconstructions and may prompt a review of safety protocols in high-risk cases.
