Gujarat High Court was placed on high alert on Tuesday after a bomb threat email was received, triggering an emergency security response by the bomb detection and disposal squad along with the local police.
Though no suspicious objects were found following a thorough search, investigators have uncovered a disturbing pattern: the threat was sent using a fake email ID created in the name of Rene Joshilda, the Chennai-based techie recently arrested for a nationwide cyber threat campaign.
In a significant revelation, the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Branch has confirmed that identical bomb threat emails were sent to at least 11 locations across India, including the high court of Ahmedabad, other courts in Surat and Rajkot.
All emails originated from the same address, created using Joshilda’s name, and were traced back to Chennai, Tamil Nadu pointing to the presence of a larger, coordinated group seeking to exploit her arrest to spread fear and confusion.
While Joshilda is already in custody for allegedly sending at least 21 threatening emails to schools, hospitals and public spaces across 11 Indian states, forensic analysis has confirmed that the tone, structure, and phrasing of these new emails differ significantly from her known style.
The high court email, in particular, bears similarities to an earlier message received on June 4 by Geneva Liberal School in Ahmedabad, which was later confirmed to have been generated using ChatGPT.
Between June 3 and 5, Geneva Liberal School received five bomb threats via email. Investigators traced two of these directly to Joshilda, who had used fake identities, VPNs and sophisticated digital tools.
However, the June 4 message and now the one targeting the Gujarat High Court appear to be the work of other actors.
Following the breakdown of their workplace association, Joshilda allegedly created fake profiles, doctored photos, and sent defamatory messages in an attempt to malign her colleague and the woman he was seeing.
When she learned of his marriage plans in early 2025, Joshilda allegedly escalated her actions sending bomb threats under aliases, including ones that used his name in a disturbing effort to sabotage his personal life.
Her known targets in Ahmedabad included Geneva school, Divya Jyot School in Bopal, B J Medical College in Asarwa, and the Narendra Modi Stadium.
The emails frequently invoked disturbing language, referring to rape cases, police inaction, and social justice issues to lend false legitimacy to the threats.
Cyber experts and senior police officials say the latest development where Joshilda’s name has been misused in emails sent to multiple high courts represents a troubling evolution in the case.
Authorities believe that a group or community, possibly from Chennai, is now either replicating her methods or working in coordination to deepen the climate of fear.
Joshilda, currently in police custody, has reportedly refused to cooperate during interrogation and has not revealed the identities of any potential collaborators. Police are continuing to analyse her seized devices for additional leads.
