Diu disappoints tourists escaping from dry Gujarat

Tourists visiting Gujarat's waterhole Diu these days find themselves in a peculiar situation. While the hotels refuse to serve them liquor in their rooms, many bars and wine shops are shut.
The bar and wine shop owners are protesting against the strict imposition of liquor rules by the Diu administration and alleged harassment by excise officials.
However, the Diu administration denied these allegations and said the action was aimed at curbing bootlegging.
As per Diu Liquor Shops and Bar Association , licences of 24 bars and shops were suspended by the Diu administration on the charges of violation of rules and over 70 other shops voluntarily shut down to avoid harassment.
He said they do not have any objection in action against those selling liquor in bulk to bootleggers.
According to hoteliers, most of the tourists coming to Diu are from Gujarat and they come here on long weekends or holidays.
