A major electricity theft case has come to light in Surat’s Rander area, where officials from Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (DGVCL) and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) detected power theft amounting to ₹2.47 crore the biggest case of electricity theft ever recorded in the state.
As part of a regular drive, DGVCL’s 96-member vigilance team inspected a total of 4,533 electricity connections in the area. During the inspection, 177 connections were found to be involved in electricity theft.
The theft totaled ₹2,47,70,500 and is under further investigation.
The method used by the thieves involved tampering with the meter seal, disconnecting one of the wires, and bypassing the meter.
According to authorities, electricity theft continues to be a serious issue in several urban and rural areas, prompting regular inspections.
This is not the first instance of theft in Rander. In 2014, a similar case involving ₹47 lakh worth of stolen electricity had been uncovered.
DGVCL has launched legal proceedings against those involved in the theft.
